Food Packaging Project
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered for the 2018 Community & Campus Day of Service!!! We came together to package over 151,000 meals for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank and other organizations fighting hunger in our community. This would not have been possible without everyone's time and effort, and the support of our many sponsors and donors who provided ingredients, funding, and other resources for the event. Thank you for your participation — as a result of your efforts, families in need in our local community will benefit.
You can find updates and pictures from the Day of Service at the following locations: CCDOS on Facebook, Illini Fighting Hunger on Facebook, CCDOS on Twitter, Illini Fighting Hunger on Twitter, and the Twitter hashtags #CCDOS18 & #ILLINOISservice. Feel free to add your own thoughts, comments, and photos to the conversation!
If you enjoyed your experience, please volunteer again! You can find volunteer opportunities through CUVolunteer.org any time, and there are a number of organizations in our community that depend on volunteers to fulfill their missions.
Thank you, and we hope to see you again next year!
The Day of Service Planning Committee
About the Project
On Saturday, April 14, 2018, we plan to package 151,000 meals — one thousand for every year of public engagement since the University was chartered — for local foodbanks and food pantries to be distributed to families in need throughout eastern Illinois.
Hundreds of volunteers are needed for the food packaging project, which will take place on the U of I campus. Several volunteer shifts will be available during the day. If you would like to help out, please register for a timeslot in advance. Space is limited and this project is very popular!
If you have questions about the Food Packaging Project, you can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
There is parking available in Lot E-14 across from the Assembly Hall (southwest corner of First and Kirby) for no cost on the weekends. If Lot E-14 is full, parking is also available at the lots in the Research Park buildings (NOT the iHotel & Conference Center).
The 100 Yellow bus route will drop you off at First and Stadium, which is just a block away from Memorial Stadium. You can view its Saturday schedule here.
The following non-packaging volunteer opportunities still need your help:
- Bag labeling: 9:00 am - 10:00 am (a seated activity)
- Memorial Stadium cleanup: 1 pm - 3 pm
- Wesley Food Pantry cleanup: 3 pm - 5 pm (at Wesley Food Pantry)
- Full day volunteering - check out table captains and all-day volunteers below!
Our food packaging volunteer shifts are almost entirely full. However, cancellations do occasionally open up a small amount of space in a shift, so keep checking back at the registration form to see if a shift has opened up!
Food packaging shifts:
- 9:30 am - 11:00 am
- 10:00 am - 11:30 am
- 10:30 am - 12:00 noon
- 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
- 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
- 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm
Leadership Roles and All-Day Volunteering
Are you interested in filling a critical need the day of the event by serving as a Day of Service Table Captain? These volunteer leaders oversee 1-2 packaging lines throughout the duration of the Day of Service to help answer questions, guide volunteers in packaging, and generally support efforts in reaching our goal of 151,000 meals! Visit the Table Captain page for more information and to apply!
All-Day volunteers are a critical part of the Day of Service. All-Day volunteers DO NOT package meals during the event. Instead, they help Day of Service staff in organizing volunteers, restocking packaging lines, moving boxes, and other tasks. All-Day volunteers work from 8am to 5pm on Saturday. To show our appreciation, we provide breakfast and lunch the day of the event. Sign up to be an all day volunteer!
On-site check-in for the Food Packaging project will take place in the West Gate at Memorial Stadium, at the corner of First & Kirby.
